Much like Storm Claudia hit the north-west the night before, Manchester City blew Manchester United away at the Etihad Stadium. It was a convincing three goal victory for their manager's side due to goals from Knaak, Shaw and Hemp. It was a display that firmly established their leadership claims as they consolidated their standing at the league summit.

Successive Defeats for Manchester United

This result represented consecutive Women's Super League losses for Skinner's side for the maiden instance since May 2024, placing them a sizable gap off the table toppers with their championship aspirations severely dented.

United’s capacity to juggle domestic and European soccer with a limited team has been a frequently analyzed issue since they secured entry to the European competition. Considering the calendar, it always felt like this was the matchday that would fully examine this capability. Regrettably for the opposition, they appeared tired all game, the landmark win against Paris Saint-Germain clearly having taken a toll.

Tactical Shifts

Skinner had tried to freshen things up with a several alterations. Ella Toone, Elisabeth Terland, Dominique Janssen and Galton all provided energy, although the exclusion of the on-form Melvine Malard to the sidelines was questioned.

The hosts, in opposition, have no such workload worries. Andrée Jeglertz made a single alteration from the previous win over the Toffees with Lauren Hemp making her first start since recovering from injury.

Commanding Opening Period

The pressure started to gather for the United boss and his team from the opening minute. This was a show of the strength from City whose energetic attack played with and dismantled the opposition with a sublime initial 45 minutes performance that saw them net a trio in just over twenty minutes.

This put the hosts in a commanding position and had Manchester United struggling. Before this match, the away side had let in just a handful in this domestic competition but they fell apart in the presence of the hosts' offensive ingenuity.

Early Chances

The warning signs came quickly when Miedema used her power to bundle Zigiotti off the ball, only to drag her shot past the post. Hemp was at the core of everything from the start, taking advantage of the gap left by Riviere down the visitors' right flank. Her deliveries were causing problems and led to an attempt for Hasegawa that Sandberg cleared off the line.

The Red Devils had several attacks forward, their long-ball tactic giving them options in the wings but they could not challenge Ayaka Yamashita. City, in the meantime, controlled the ball, probing their rivals and trying to draw them out of their defensive shape.

Scoring Spree

They converted their dominance with almost the first period played when Aoba Fujino won the home team a corner. A delivery to the back post was nodded across goal by Shaw for Knaak to score. It was City’s 7th headed goal of the term.

They extended their advantage with another pair of goals just before the half-time. When Jade Rose was able to maraud through the middle from the back, the pitch opened up for City. The key Casparij picked the ball up on the wing before delivering a pinpoint low cross for Bunny Shaw to tap home. Four minutes later, they had a third after a quick shift in the ball saw Lauren Hemp afforded the room to fire a shot home from distance.

Final Period

The clearest substitution came from Skinner at the half-time as Malard entered for Terland but by this time it was futile to change the course of the match. Former City player Jess Park came closest, hitting the upright, but the away team were offensively poor and did not manage to produce a single shot on goal.

The hosts, meanwhile, could have increased their advantage when a delightful Vivianne Miedema pass sent Bunny Shaw away only for her to miss the chance but it did not affect the result to the hosts. Previously unable to defeat any side who placed above them last season, Jeglertz’s side now have successes against Arsenal and Manchester United to position them in a strong position after the opening fixtures.
