Kristen Stewart has declared she is “furious” that progress for female directors in the film industry have reversed after a short-lived surge of positive change post the #MeToo era.

Stewart, who helmed the upcoming film her latest project, delivered an emotional address at a female-focused event in Los Angeles organized by the Oscars organization.

“The backsliding from a brief moment of progress is statistically devastating,” she informed attendees. “Such a pitiful number of films from the past year have been made by women.”

A yearly study that monitors the presence of female filmmakers stated that eleven of the top 100 films of last year were helmed by female directors, down from 16 in the year 2020.

‘Male-Dominated Industry Model’

In her address, Stewart said: “After the MeToo movement, it appeared likely that stories created by and for females were at last receiving recognition. That we could be permitted or even encouraged to express ourselves and our common stories, all of our experiences without filter.

“However, I can confirm to the intense struggle that it takes every step when the material is too grim, too controversial, when the honesty with which it serves up observations about situations routinely experienced by women, frequently provokes disgust and rejection.”

She added: “We can discuss pay disparities and taxes on tampons and measure [inequality] in many measurable forms. But the act of muting voices, it’s like we’re not even supposed to be angry. But I can eat this podium with a utensil and sharp tool. I’m furious.”

Attendees hearing Stewart’s speech featured a number of well-known female stars.

Stewart received several rounds of applause during the duration of her brief talk.

“I appreciate you,” she stated. “I am not grateful a male-centric industry framework that pretends to want to hang out with us while siphoning our resources and belittling our true perspectives. We must avoid being used as tokens. Let’s start printing our own currency.”

Upcoming projects from several female directors are among those for the forthcoming Oscars race, but the best director category is anticipated again to be male in majority.
